In the current funding ranking of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), the Max Born Institute performs excellently. Third-party funding at the DFG is considered to be one of the most important quality features in the evaluation of research achievements in Germany. The MBI ranks 16th among more than 170 listed research institutions. It is one of the very few non-university research institutions that are named in the name of this university-focused report because of its good networking with universities. This aspect is also made very clear by the DFG's overview maps of networks in physics and chemistry.
