Project Goals

Experimental and theoretical investigation of new approaches and limits for generation and manipulation of attosecond pulses or femtosecond pulses at extreme wavelengths

The project “Ultrafast Nonlinear Optics” includes all research activities to generate ultrashort optical and even attosecond light pulses with unique parameters and the investigation of possible limitations by the underlying nonlinear optical processes due to the extreme pulse parameters. In close cooperation with experiments theoretical studies of new methods for the generation of ultrashort pulses at extreme wavelengths with improved characteristics are performed, such as quasi-phasematching, parametric amplification and plasmon-enhanced HHG. In addition to ongoing activities for generation of strong isolated attosecond pulses several approaches for a proper control of the time delay in real attosecond pump-probe schemes are investigated.
Other current and planned activities are at the cutting edge of nonlinear optics, e.g., to explore uncharted territory such as the response time of quasi-instantaneous nonlinearities, higher-order Kerr effects, and new schemes for high repetition rate high-harmonic generation. The whole activity is accompanied by examination of new techniques to manipulate and measure few cycle pulses.
