Master Project: Molecules in Intense Fields

Stellenprofil: We are looking for a Master student to investigate ultrafast dynamics in molecules. In a time-resolved experiment, molecular dynamics is initiated by a pump pulse and probed by an intense laser field. In a covariance detection scheme which we recently established, we uncover otherwise hidden
correlations between molecular fragments.The fields of ultrashort lasers can be so intense that they exceed the binding potential of atoms and small molecules. Electrons in the valence shell can then leave the molecule by laser-induced tunneling. Ionization and excitation can lead to the fragmentation of the molecule into several charged fragments. Their correlation can be a sensitive probe of structure and dynamics on ultrashort timescales of femto- to attoseconds.
Anforderungen: The Max-Born-Institute in Berlin is one of the leading research centers in the world for non-linear spectroscopy and Attosecond Science. We are offering Master projects on a regular basis, on which you work in close collaboration with PhD students and experienced scientists.We are looking for a Master student to investigate ultrafast dynamics in molecules. In a time-resolved experiment, molecular dynamics is initiated by a pump pulse and probed by an intense laser field. In a covariance detection scheme which we recently established, we uncover otherwise hidden correlations between molecular fragments.
The tasks of this master project in experimental physics include:
- Set-up of a pump-probe laser scheme.
- Data acquisition, evaluation and interpretation in collaboration with experienced scientists.
- A technical project involving an upgrade of our system.
You will learn about:
- Ultrafast laser technology.
- Pump-probe experiments involving ultrahigh vacuum.
- Molecular dynamics and Attosecond Science.
